Why GEME? Real Microbial Composting, Not Just Drying
The electric composter market has grown quickly, but the machines don’t all work the same way. Many food recyclers, including Lomi, Mill and Vitamix FoodCycler models, primarily heat, dry and grind food scraps. Their output can be useful, but it is dehydrated food material rather than the product of the same continuous microbial process used by GEME.
In independent testing, the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council concluded that Lomi and FoodCycler samples were not mature compost: additional biological breakdown is needed. That distinction matters if you want more than a dry, compact way to store food scraps.
GEME Pro and GEME Terra 2 take a different route. They combine Kobold™ microbes with the GEMEBrain™ control system to manage a warm, moist and oxygen-rich environment. Add suitable scraps throughout the day; the continuously operating system supports biological breakdown and creates moist, active Compost Base for soil blending.
What did Compost Magazine find?
Compost Magazine gave GEME Terra 2 4.4 out of 5 after several weeks of hands-on use. Its reviewer highlighted the machine’s ability to handle ordinary food scraps, meat and thick sauces, and described the output as actual compost. Small bones took longer to decompose and remained visible for several days.
The publication says GEME supplied its review unit free of charge, and that GEME had no control over its conclusions. Read the independent review.
A permanent odor-control system
Both models use a permanent metal-ion oxidation odor-treatment system rather than a disposable charcoal filter that needs routine replacement. That removes one recurring purchase from the ownership routine. Compare the details in our electric composter filter-cost guide.
Which GEME Composter Fits Your Home?
GEME Pro: For bigger daily loads
GEME Pro is designed for households that genuinely produce more scraps. Its 19 L chamber and processing capacity of up to 5 kg a day suit families of four or more, frequent cooks, gardeners with suitable small clippings, and some shared kitchens or small cafés. A typical cleanout interval of about 6–12 months makes the larger chamber especially appealing if you prefer to harvest less often.
GEME Terra 2: For everyday kitchen routines
With a 14 L chamber and a capacity of up to 2 kg per day, GEME Terra 2 is a natural fit for one- to three-person households, apartments, and open-plan kitchens. It stands on the floor and is approximately 56.6 cm tall. Check your available space and lid clearance if you plan to place it under a counter.
GEME lists operating sound at approximately 35–40 dB under test conditions. Compost Magazine measured up to 50.3 dB in its own test, so the sound you hear can vary with placement and operation.
Both follow an add-and-forget routine: set up the microbial bed, then add suitable scraps as you cook. For GEME Terra 2, the startup instructions call for Kobold Starter and approximately 500 ml of water, followed by a 6–8-hour activation period. Check the instructions for your exact model.
How to Use GEME Compost Base
GEME produces a moist, biologically active Compost Base: a concentrated soil amendment that can help return the nutrients in kitchen scraps to your growing space. Here’s the simple route from chamber to garden.
- Harvest and screen. Remove some material when needed. Sift out larger, unfinished pieces, such as dense fibres or small bones, and return suitable pieces to the GEME chamber for further processing.
- Blend at approximately 1:8. Mix one part screened Compost Base with eight parts plain soil by volume. This makes a gentle, practical soil blend for garden use.
- Cover and water. Apply the blend around growing areas, cover with a 2–3 cm layer of plain soil where appropriate, and water. For new plants, place a plain-soil buffer between roots and the amended layer. For established plants, work around the outer root area.
For containers, follow the same 1:8 Compost Base-to-plain-soil ratio rather than treating Compost Base as finished potting mix. Explore the full GEME Compost Base application guide for detailed steps.
GEME Composter FAQ
What is the main difference between GEME and Lomi or FoodCycler?
Lomi and Vitamix FoodCycler primarily heat, dry and grind food scraps into dehydrated material. GEME uses Kobold microbes in a continuously managed aerobic environment to produce a moist, biologically active Compost Base for soil blending.
Do I have to replace the odor filter?
GEME Pro and GEME Terra 2 use a permanent metal-ion oxidation odor-treatment system designed without routine disposable charcoal-filter replacements. Odor can still vary with the material and chamber conditions, particularly when the lid is open.
Can I use Compost Base with indoor plants?
Screen the harvested material and mix approximately one part Compost Base with eight parts plain soil by volume. Use a layer of plain soil as a buffer where appropriate and follow the current GEME guidance for your plants.
What food scraps can GEME Pro and GEME Terra 2 handle?
Both are designed for many everyday organic scraps, including fruit, vegetables, cooked food, meat, sauces and small bones. Small bones and other dense materials take longer. Avoid large hard bones, shells, plastic, synthetic packaging and non-organic waste; consult the current model guide for specific inputs.
How often do I need to maintain my GEME?
The current GEME guidance provides approximately 3 to 6 months for GEME Terra 2 and 6 to 12 months for GEME Pro between cleanouts, depending on use. Kobold Boost Packs are optional after the first harvest or when breakdown slows; follow current product guidance.
For Kobold products and replenishment guidance, see GEME Kobold supplies.
