UNEP’s newest global consumer-level estimate describes 2022. FAO and the United Nations report pre-retail food-loss data through 2023. ReFED’s 2026 U.S. report uses 2024 data. EPA’s most detailed landfill-food methane model extends through 2020.

The most defensible way to cite these figures is therefore to preserve both the source year and the data year.

Food Loss Food lost after harvest and before retail through production, storage, transport, processing and wholesale.

EPA also estimates that approximately 61% of methane generated by landfilled food waste was not captured under the modelled national conditions.

ReFED’s 2024 data analysis adds another current estimate: roughly 23 million tons of landfilled surplus food released more than 600,000 metric tons of methane.

These figures should not be mathematically combined because their scopes and models differ.

At the global level, the United Nations estimates food loss and waste contribute close to $1 trillion in annual economic losses.

That is why simply changing the disposal method is not enough.

If edible food is produced and then composted instead of eaten, the upstream waste has already happened.

9. Why Is Landfill Such a Bad Destination for Food?

Food is wet, carbon-rich and highly biodegradable.

Inside a landfill, waste is compacted, and oxygen becomes limited. Decomposition then shifts toward anaerobic pathways that generate methane.

Food also breaks down relatively quickly.

EPA notes that this creates a timing problem: significant methane can be produced before landfill gas collection systems are installed, expanded or operating at later-stage efficiency.

There is no single machine or disposal method that solves food waste.

The best solution is a hierarchy.

EPA’s Wasted Food Scale places prevention at the top because avoiding waste preserves the food itself and all the resources used to produce it.
